more regarding Selma |
Drawing from writings of Manning Marable , Jeff explained that one factor influencing his alarming trend is the globalization of the economy , with the subsequent effect of polarization of poverty , power and privilege as the U.S moves from a labor intensive to a capital intensive economy.
Discussing the history of the civil rights movement , Jeff observed that the African American point of view was not as uniform as he had once believed ; but rather , characterized by debate , competition and conflict among civil rights leaders and organizations such as the NAACP , SCLC , CORE , AND
SNCC . Jeff noticed a similar dichotomy while visiting Selma, where he was welcomed with enthusiasm by some members of the comunity , but greeted with skepticism by others who felt his message to be "too radical."
Jeff's presentation was enhanced by an excerpt from the audiotape of Howard Zinn's "People's History of the U.S.", wherein actor Matt Damon read a summary of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's. Jeff also shared a book of photographs to illustrate his Alabama experience. The congregation wishes to thank Jeff for his presentation, which generated much spirited commentary from the group. We look forward to meeting one of the more progressive residents of Selma whom Jeff became acquainted with who may visit and address our congragation this summer.
