FATHER OF LIGHT BEER STILL DRINKING UP KNOWLEDGE
HINGHAM, Maryland (Wireless Flash) The name Joseph Owades may not be on your lips but his invention possibly is: Light beer. Back in 1967, Owades figured out how to take the calories out of beer but not, as some people think, by simply adding water. Owades figured out a way to create enzymes that remove excessive carbohydrates released during brewing. Light beer has its critics, but Owades says no ones ever thrown a beer in his face and he hasnt had to pay for a brew in years. Despite his unique place in beer history, Owades isnt drunk with power. Once he figured out how to reduce calories, he started trying to improve the taste. It took a while nearly 35 years to be exact. His latest creation, Edison Light microbrew, is being introduced in the first part of 2002.
